Electrical Circuit Symbols • are a short- form convenience used in circuit diagrams to represent each of the components of a circuit. • Note: always use a ruler for drawing circuit diagrams. Diagrams are generally either square-shaped or rectangular.
Open switch • Closed switch
Battery • The longer line represents the positive terminal and the shorter end the negative terminal. • The number of sets of long/short lines represents the number of cells in the battery. Example: the battery below has 5 cells.
Two-cell battery • Single cell battery
Alternating Current • This is the type of current that flows through your house. It alternates direction.
Resistor or Load • Resistors are used to slow the current. • Too much current can damage electrical appliances. • The stripes on the resistor indicate the amount of resistance provided by this particular resistor.
Ground Connector • Prevents electrical shock from current leaking into uninsulated parts of an appliance etc.
Fuse: • A fuse is a thin piece of metal that will melt if the current is too high, thereby protecting the circuit.
Voltmeter • A voltmeter measures the difference in electric potential energy between two points in a circuit.
Ammeter • An ammeter measures the current
