  2. -Also known as Octavian -Great Uncle of Julius Caesar -Expanded the Roman Empire into Egypt, Northern Spain and large parts of central Europe -Defeated Marc Antony and Cleopatra at Actium Greece.

  3. 2nd- Tiberius (14 - 37 C.E.)

  4. -Step son of Octavian -One of Rome’s great generals (Military Man) -Didn’t really want to be Emperor, but took the reign reluctantly -Fearful of assassination he left to the island of Capri. There he sent vague letters and orders, but was an ineffective emperor

  5. 3rd Caligula (37 - 41 C.E.)

  6. -Nickname “Little Boots” or “Soldier’s Boots” -Initially very popular amongst the Romans -Mentally ill(tried to have his horse elected Consul) -Intended to place a statue of himself in Jerusalem

  7. 4th Claudius (41 – 54 C.E.)

  8. Tiberius’s Nephew -Childhood disease left him crippled, frail, and nervous. -Senate regarded him as unintelligent -After the murder of Caligula, the Praetorian Guard hailed him as new emperor.

  10. Had his rule start and end violently Murdered his mother Great Fire of Rome occurred during his reign Blamed the Christians for the Great Fire

  11. Diocletian 284 to 305 C.E. (AD)

  12. Ordered the destruction of all churches and scriptures within the empire -Persecuted Christians for their beliefs -Re-organized Rome’s Finances and Military -Lived in an Army Camp Most of his life -Split the Roman Empire into two (Eastern and Western)

  13. Titus 79 to 81 C.E. (AD)

  14. -Had the Roman Colosseum finished during his reign -Mt. Vesuvius erupted and destroyed Pompeii -Oversaw operations to aid victims of Volcano eruption -Widespread disease during his reign
