  1. CRRL: CoRA Science Highlights Short period waves Large vertical velocities • Hotpay2 rocket campaign, 31 Jan 2008, resolution: 1min, 3km • Wave properties: • 8min period, long vertical wavelength • 30m/s vertical wind amplitude • Na density and temperature consistent with vertical winds • Large sporadic layer on 28 June 2009 at ALOMAR with 4 times abundance of normal Na layer • Strongest observed at ALOMAR • Perturbation visible with 45 sec period and 0.5km vertical motion => +- 20m/s vertical wind • Cause: Acoustic wave? Horizontal advection?

  2. CRRL: CoRA Science Highlights Mesospheric effect of Jan 2009 stratospheric warming Na/Fe Temperature at 87km (K) • Collaborative project: CoRA/FFI/ IAP • Very large sudden stratospheric warming in Jan 2009 • Good weather from 13-28 Jan at ALOMAR (69N, 16E) during stratwarm • Sodium lidar (CoRA/FFI) – 11 nights • Fe lidar (IAP) – 7 nights • 14 Jan: T = 135K at 99km, lowest winter mesopause temperature on record? • 23 Jan: cooling of 50K below mean temperature at 87km • 27 Jan: warming of 20K above mean temperature at 87km • Descent of temperature structures are consistent with ECMWF • Enhanced mesopause gravity wave activity from 25-29 Jan during reversal of stratospheric zonal wind • Need to add RMR lidar Rayleigh temperatures and lidar and radar winds to complete temperature/wind profiles +20K Mean T -50K Na/Fe Temperature (K) ECMWF Temperature (K)

  3. Na lidar/MTM observations and numerical modeling of linked KH instability (Maui MALT) (Simkhada et al., 2010; Laughman et al., 2010) - KH structures at two different altitudes (with Ri < 1/4) appear linked - numerical modeling suggests dynamical coupling of 2 unstable shear layers
