Essay Question #2: Responsibility for Tom Robinson’s Death. • Mayella/ Bob Ewell—Count as ONE EXAMPLE. • Maycomb County/ “Maycomb’s Usual Disease.” • Atticus— • Sheriff Heck Tate— • Tom Robinson himself— • **Focus on writing about what these characters DID or DID NOT do and how those items create ‘responsibility.” You DO NOT WANT TO WRITE ABOUT what these characters “should have done.” **
Essay Question #3: Great Expectations Pip’s Character Development. • Thesis Ideas: Think about who he is at the beginning of the novel, and who he becomes by the end of Stage One. • Character Influences—Estella: • Makes Pip want to become a gentleman and educated. Also responsible for his increasing snobbery. • Discourages Pip from being “common.” Miss Havisham: -- Makes Pip feel badly about himself. --Tells Estella to “break their hearts and have no mercy.” --Pip’s gaining a fortune. He assumes that she is responsible and therefore intends for him to end up with Estella. His “Great Expectations”: • His money will enable him to look down on others.
