  7. When Gibbon speaks of Sabinian he is speaking of Rome’s last great attempt to fend off the Goths and perpetuate the power of Rome. Unfortunately, despite Sabinian’s skill and fame (his father was a famous general as well) he was not able to defeat the barbarians. In fact, as a result of this defeat (during the Byzantine Empire) the “Romans” were forced to turn to piracy of their own people to support the military. This was the end of the end for the Romans. The issues of foreign soldiers and poor pay finally caught up to them.

  8. In many ways Sabinian operates as the last great hope of the “Roman” Empire. By this point the capital has been moved from Rome, which has been sacked, to Constantinople. Nevertheless, the residents considered themselves Roman. Sabinian’s ability to lead the army may have been impressive, but the structure of the Roman army had been too deeply undermined by the use of foreign mercenaries and nepotism to make it effective on the battlefield.
