Why are phosphorus & calcium important? • Phos = important for DNA, ATP, phospholipids, bones & teeth and compounds that function in photosynthesis and respiration.
Why are phosphorus & calcium important? • Phos = important for DNA, ATP, phospholipids, bones & teeth and compounds that function in photosynthesis and respiration. • Ca = important for proper functioning of cell membranes, and many enzyme reactions. Also forms teeth, bones and exoskeletons of many marine organisms.

Also forms teeth, bones and exoskeletons of many marine organisms. • Phosphate and calcium are found in rock – the are released to the living world through weathering.
The Cycles • Move in a cycle between organisms and the environment
The Cycles • Move in a cycle between organisms and the environment • Does not involve the atmosphere
The Cycles • Move in a cycle between organisms and the environment • Does not involve the atmosphere • P & Ca are taken up and dissolved in soil water by plant roots – then incorporated into the organic molecules in the plant body and these pass through the food chains and webs.
The Cycles • Move in a cycle between organisms and the environment • Does not involve the atmosphere • P & Ca are taken up and dissolved in soil water by plant roots – then incorporated into the organic molecules in the plant body and these pass through the food chains and webs. • They finally reach the decomposers which release some of the ions back into the soil.
How humans affect the cycle • Increase the rate of phosphorus recycling by adding fertilisers & increase rate of ca by using lime, dolomite or gypsum.
How humans affect the cycle • Increase the rate of phosphorus recycling by adding fertilisers & increase rate of ca by using lime, dolomite or gypsum. • Seabird deposits accumulated over hundreds of years are mined as guano and used as fertiliser – rich in phosphates http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKkC2JpjaGc
