THE MEN IN BLACK (MiB) An Exploration of a Phenomenon The Definition of a MiB: (From the Wikipedia) “Men in Black (MIB), in American popular culture and in UFO conspiracy theories, are men dressed in black suits who claim to be government agents who harass or threaten UFO witnesses to keep them quiet about what they have seen. It is sometimes implied that they may be aliens themselves. The term is also frequently used to describe mysterious men working for unknown organizations, as well as to various branches of government allegedly designed to protect secrets or perform other strange activities. The term is generic, used for any unusual, threatening or strangely behaved individual whose appearance on the scene can be linked in some fashion with a UFO sighting.”

THE MEN IN BLACK (MiB) An Exploration of a Phenomenon Historical Case One – Albert Bender and the Three Men Albert Bender – Head of the International Flying Saucer Bureau and publisher of “Space Review” In 1953 Albert Bender was approached by three MiB about his research. The result of that conversation left Bender bewildered and scared, and prompted him to shutdown IFSB with a cryptic notice "LATE BULLETIN. A source which the IFSB considers very reliable has informed us that the investigation of the flying saucer mystery and the solution is approaching its final stages. This same source to whom we had referred data, which had come into our possession, suggested that it was not the proper method and time to publish the data in Space Review.” He also stated "We advise those engaged in saucer work to please be very cautious." In 1963 he published "Flying Saucers and the Three Men In Black”
THE MEN IN BLACK (MiB) An Exploration of a Phenomenon Historical Case Two – Rex Heflin Rex Heflin – California Highway Inspector On August 3, 1965, Heflin claimed to have taken a series of Polaroid photos of a UFO from his car while stopped on the Santa Ana Freeway. The pictures extremely clear and showed an object shaped much like a straw hat floating stationary above the ground. Obviously these pictures got a great deal of publicity, and to this day are still widely reprinted. Heflin's story was also investigated by the Air Force shortly after it became known. On October 11, 1967, more then two years after Heflin's original sighting, Heflin reported another encounter with several mysterious visitors. A man who said that he was one Captain C. H. Edmonds of the Space Systems Division, Systems Command, a unit of the Air Force that had been involved in the first investigation of his photos, came to his home. Strangely he started discussing the Bermuda Triangle?
THE MEN IN BLACK (MiB) An Exploration of a Phenomenon Historical Case Three – Clyde Lewis Clyde Lewis – Radio Host – Ground Zero Radio In 1992 Clyde Lewis, then broadcasting on KBEAR in Salt Lake City was approached by a prospector who had snapped a bizarre photo he believed was an alien body outside the Dugway Proving Grounds. Clyde immediately began to discuss the photo and even posted it on his website. This prompted a visit by two men in dark suits who came to the station to ask it be removed. When Clyde refused they suggested something bad might happen. Several days later Clyde’s car was bombed. A few days later the same two men returned and this time pointed out that being a UFO researcher was dangerous, and Clyde should probably take down the photo.
THE MEN IN BLACK (MiB) An Exploration of a Phenomenon • Modern Theories • Here is a limited list of some current theories of the origin of the Men in Black • They are Tolpas or thought forms manifest by the global subconscious. • Both Tim Beckley, John Keel and Jacque Vallee have fronted the idea that the MiB are more akin to demons, fairies or other mystical beings. • Bill Moore hypothesized they are member of a branch of Air Force Intelligence called the Special Activities Center. • Bill Birnes has discussed the idea they are from a secretive government organization. • George Hunt Williamson has said he believes they are related to the constellation of Sirius.
THE MEN IN BLACK (MiB) An Exploration of a Phenomenon So what do I think? After much research of known cases and many conversations with other researchers and people involved in UFO encounters I believe the ultimate source of the Men in Black phenomenon is the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Why? The answer to why is actually very easy. Within our government hierarchy the USAF has sole responsibility for threats from Space and the Air, which UFO’s would qualify as. Within the Air Force, the OSI has sole jurisdiction for conducting investigations from Murder all the way through counter espionage. But lets look at this amazing organization a little further….
THE MEN IN BLACK (MiB) An Exploration of a Phenomenon • The United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations: • They were founded in 8/1/1948 at the request of congress by Special Agent Joseph Carroll, former senior assistant to J. Edger Hoover. • They are structured like the FBI with Directorates ranging from Science (colocated at the FBI Lab!) to the Directorate of Sabotage and Espionage. • They are trained by the FBI at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and carry the official classification of Federal Agent. • Their ranks are classified and they will refer to themselves as Special Agent or SA. They also do not wear uniforms, instead they wear suits and drive unmarked cars with government plates. • They have a world wide footprint and are active in all NATO countries and carry diplomatic immunity for themselves and their families • Their orders are classified, always, and maintain a parallel chain of command where even a Special Agent is a phone call away from the Inspector General of the Air Force. • All their investigations are classified! • They receive special training in interrogation, subversion, counter intelligence, espionage and disinformation! • They hold nothing and classify everything!
THE MEN IN BLACK (MiB) An Exploration of a Phenomenon So What’s Their Involvement with UFO’s? Project Grudge/Bluebook – AFOSI served as the primary investigators into the UFO sightings tabulated by Bluebook and Grudge including scientific investigations. They also convened a special scientific committee of luminaries of the 1950’s to discuss they green fireball phenomenon. The Cash/Lindstrum Incident – When Betty Cash reported the now famous UFO sighting she was “interviewed” and interrogated by AFOSI. Randlesham/Bentwaters – After the Bentwaters affair occurred Col. Halt and the other members of the team were “interviewed” or interrogated by a special AFOSI team brought in to investigate. The results of that investigation are classified and will never been seen because AFOSI classified everything!
