Common Core State Standards:Forward Thinking KSDE/KATM Summer Academy ~ 2011
Good Morning! Please use this time to explore the seconline tool and/or other CCSS online resources. Make sure you squeeze in a break before we reconvene at 10:15.
Time to Review Alphabox Write a word or phrase for each letter that relates to what you’ve learned about the CCSS.
Give One ~ Get One 1. Stand up and find someone to High Five! 2. Partner A shares something from his or her Alphabox. If Partner B doesn’t have it on his/her list, s/he records the idea. 3. Then Partner B offers an item from his/her Alphabox and Partner A records it. 4. Partners split up, raise their hands, and look for another partner to High Five.
What are we doing today? • Participants will. . . • engage in a lesson that models teaching for understanding. • explore helpful online resources that support the CCSS. • formulate an implementation plan for your school/district.
Teaching for Understanding What is one half of one half divided by one half? Use your Twizzler to model your understanding of this question.
What is of ? one whole
What does it mean? What is ÷ ? How many 2’s will “fit” into 6? What do we mean when we ask, “What is 6 ÷ 2?” 3
What is ÷ ? How many halves will “fit” into the fourth? 1/2 1/4 1/2 How much of the half will “fit” into the fourth?
Where do we go from here? • Transition • Implementation • PD Needs
Suggested Alignment Tasks • Begin with the Mathematical Practices of CCSS (8 Practice Standards) • Look closely at the Critical Areas • Identify 2003 tested indicators that are not covered by Critical Areas for supplementation (especially during 2011-2012 school years) • Look at the details in the CCSS to ensure full curriculum alignment by 2014-2015
Any Suggestions? What are some suggestions for ways to present the CCSS to staff without them freaking out? With moving more concepts to lower grades, how do you overcome abstract concepts with kids who developmentally aren’t ready? (ie. Still in the concrete stage of thinking) What could be 3-4 things to share with faculty for a PD day in August?
Time to Brainstorm • What steps will you take to: • Transition • Implement the CCSS • Meet PD Needs
AFTER LUNCH TODAY You will be joining teachers from your building/district to analyze curriculum and formulate a plan for implementation. Elementary “people” will be meeting in the auditorium at 12:30. Middle & High School “people” come back to this room after lunch.
