General Facts about Nicaragua • Bordered by Honduras to the North and Costa Rica to the South • Largest country in Central America (smaller than the state of New York) • Major environmental problems caused by: destructive earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, hurricanes
Features of a Rainforest • Rainforests are characterized by high rainfall • The soil can be poor because high rainfall tends to leach out soluble nutrients. • The densest areas are found in the forest canopy, which is the continuous cover of foliage formed by adjacent treetops.
Temperatures and Rainfall • Rainfall tends to be highest near the equator • Temperatures generally fall between 72-93F • Rainforests in Nicaragua are subject to heavy rainfall, at least 80 inches during dry season (2,000 mm), and in some areas over 430 inches (10,920 mm) of rain during wet season.
Importance of Rainforests • Many of the world’s important food crops and domestic animals have been developed from rainforest species • Rainforests help deter the greenhouse effect • Plants and animals of the rainforest also provide us with food, fuel wood, shelter, and medicines
Biodiversity of Rainforests • Cover less than 2 percent of Earth's surface • House an estimated 50% of all life on the planet • Estimated 5-50 million specieslive in rainforest environments
Animals and Species • More than half of the world's estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects live in the tropical rainforests
Destruction of Rainforests • One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second with tragic consequences for both developing and industrial countries. • More than 200,000 acres of rainforest are burned every day. That is more than 150 acres lost every minute of every day, and 78 million acres lost every year
Interesting Facts • Tropical rain forests are called the 'world's largest pharmacy because of the large amount of natural medicines discovered there. Nearly half of the medicines that we use come from the rainforests. • Rain forests are responsible for containing the "basic ingredients of birth control hormones, stimulants, and tranquilizing drugs". • Scientists believe that the cures for many more diseases will be discovered there in the future.
