Needs and concerns of combat Veterans with mild traumatic brain injury Virginia S. Daggett, PhD, RN; Tamilyn Bakas, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN; Janice Buelow, PhD, RN, FAAN; Barbara Habermann, PhD, RN; Laura L. Murray, PhD, CCC-SLP
Aim • Explore needs and concerns of combat Veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) to provide support for mTBI-specific conceptual model. • Relevance • TBI is major cause of morbidity among U.S. servicemembers. • Even mTBI can result in cognitive impairments that affect Veterans’ postdeployment community reintegration.
Method • Conducted content analysis of qualitative interview data using thematic matrix with predetermined code list. • Achieved data saturation after interviews with 8 Veterans.
Results • Key categories and dominant themes: • Cognitive impairments. • Physical symptoms. • Emotions and behaviors. • Instrumental activities of daily living. • Interpersonal interactions. • Community reintegration.
Conclusion • Findings provide preliminary support for new, context-specific conceptual model with potential to identify areas for future interventions to enhance community reintegration of combat Veterans with mTBI.
