Senior Time Line • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER • ____Use aplanner to keep track of your college application materials, assignments and activities • ____Make an appointment to meet with the college/post secondary counselor • (room 108) • ____ Visit GWHS college/career website at www.gwhscollege.wikispaces.com to • view schedule of college representative visits, scholarships, employment and • enrichment opportunities • ____Register and take the SAT/ACT. Registration information is available in room • 108 or online at: www.collegeboard.comor www. actstudent.org • ____Review your credits with your general counselor. Register for Saturday/After • School Credit Recovery classes, if necessary • ____Finalize the list of colleges and universities to which you will apply. Email • colleges for applications, catalogues and viewbooks

  5. September/October • ____Begin to gather information needed for applications i.e., letters of • recommendation, personal essay & resume. • ____Complete online or paper applications. Refer to your directions for completing • applications and sending transcripts in the GWHS College Planning Guide • ____Attend College Fairs. • ____Request college recommendations from your teachers – meet with college • guidance • counselor to request letter of recommendation if needed. • ____Athletes, register with the NCAA eligibility center at • http://web1.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.htnl • ____Research scholarship opportunities and request application materials

November/December • NOVEMBER/DECEMBER • ____Take SAT and have scores sent to colleges and High School • ____Register for the December ACT • ____Continue to submit applications for college admission • ____Obtain appropriate financial aid applications from schools you are applying to for • admission • ____Consult college counselor to review your “smart list” colleges worksheet • ____ Attend GWHS Financial Aid Night. (in December)

November/December • ____Make copies of everything you send through the mail or online • ____Submit Scholarship applications before deadlines • ____Apply for U.S. Department of Education personal identification • number(PIN) online at www.pin.ed.gov to begin the financial aid • process • ____Remember that application deadlines for early admissions programs are usually • between November 1st and 15th • ____Start to gather financial documents and materials required for filing the Free • Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) • ____Remind teachers and counselors about deadlines for submitting letters of • recommendation

January/February/March • JANUARY/FEBRUARY/MARCH • ____Ask parents to file their 2011 federal income tax return as soon after January 1, 2011 as • possible • ____Have your parents gather financial records from previous year. Complete FAFSA • (online) beginning January 1, 2012. Attend a Financial Aid Workshop at GWHS. • ____Monitor applications to be sure that all materials are sent and received in time-Notify Mr. • Bachmann if documents are missing from the application • ____It’s not too late. Submit applications if you have not already done so! • ____You will receive a Student Aid report in response to the FAFSA you submitted. Check • the SAR for errors and return ONLY if corrections need to be made • ____Continue to complete and submit scholarship applications before deadlines

  9. April/May • APRIL/MAY • ____Identify a financial aid contact at each college where you have • been accepted. Check in with that person every few weeks • about the status of your financial aid package • ____After reviewing your financial aid award letters, send your • deposit to the college/school you will attend. • ____Notify other colleges/post secondary schools that have • accepted you that you will not attend • ____If applicable, and still available, apply for CORE Scholarship • (4/1/12-6/1/12)

June • JUNE • ____Complete and return senior survey to college/ • post secondary counselor • ____Notify college/post secondary counselor of any • grants/scholarships that you have been awarded • to you for your freshmen year of college • ____Bring stamped, addressed envelope to transcript • secretary so a final transcript can be mailed to • the school you have chosen to attend

Federal Pell Grant - Receive between $555 and $5,550 (in 2011-2012) depending on your family income, cost of education and enrollment status. -All other need-based financial assistance will be awarded after your Pell Grant has been determined. The federal government may revise the amount available for the Pell Grant each year.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) • Annual awards range from $100 to $4,000 for undergraduate students. • Priority is given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. • The amount of an eligible student's award depends on the amount of funding available at each school and the school's policies for awarding aid. • The federal government may revise the amount available for FSEOG.

Federal Perkins Loan • You may qualify for up to $5,500 annually as an undergraduate at a 5% annual interest rate and take up to 10 years to repay your loan. • Graduate students may borrow up to $8,000 per year. • The amount of an eligible student's award depends on the amount of funding available at each school and the school's policies for awarding aid.

High School was difficult so college will be even more difficult • 5. There is no way I have the grades and SAT scores to get into college
