The People of Sociology • Emile Durkheim 1858-1917. • Made sociology recognized as an established scientific field of study. • Studied nearly every topic of Sociology. • Interested in the WHOLE, not individuals. • Proposed the idea of a collective consciousness. • Collective Consciousness: Shared ideas that bind groups together.
The People of Sociology • Herbert Spencer 1820-1903. • Developed the concept of Social Darwinism. • Social Darwinism: Applies the social elements to Charles Darwin’s biological theory of “survival of the fittest”. • Says great societies will take over the weak to obtain the limited world resources and to spread their cultures.
The People of Sociology • Karl Marx 1818-1883. • Studied the impact of class on social development. • Identifies poverty and wealth as a detriment to society. • Promotes socialism/communism (a classless economic and governing theory) to solve this problem of classes.
