4 Parts of Health • You can’t tell which one is “healthier” since there is much more to health than what we can see. • Health is a condition of your physical, emotional, mental and social well-being
Physical Health • Physical health is the part of health that describes the condition of the body • Examples: • Sleeping/resting • Food that you eat • Exercise • Hygiene • Drug, Alcohol, tobacco use • Medications
What do you do to stay Active? • List examples
Emotional Health • Emotional Health is the way you recognize and deal with your feelings. • Examples: • Expressing your emotions • Showing self-control • Thinking before acting • Knowing strengths and weaknesses • Respecting yourself and others
Emotional Health • Going through adolescence you will be dealing with a lot of changes. • You are growing, changing, have new feelings, body changes, stress, new responsibilities, etc. • These changes are sometimes difficult to deal with

Mental Health • Mental health is how you deal with life’s demands. • Examples: • Dealing with stresses • Accepting new ideas • Working with others • Effectively solving problems • Managing your life and time
Social Health • Social health is the part of health that describes the way you interact with people • Examples: • How you treat other people • Showing respect to others • Supporting and encouraging others • Expressing feelings • Putting yourself in others’ shoes • Asking for help
Social Health • The first place you learn social skills is in your family. • Interacting with friends, classmates, teammates, teachers and coaches are also places where we learn how to interact socially

Create an Assessment • Your assessment will have 12 questions • 3 questions from each part of health • There should be 3 answer choices for each questions • Each answer will be worth points(0,1,2) • Add up points from each answer to get the total • Create a key to assess the person’s health

Wellness • Wellness is the state of good health achieved by balancing your physical, mental, emotional, and social health. • If you do not maintain a balance of the four parts of health, you will not be at your best
Influences on Your Health • DO NOW- What are some influences on your personal health and how do they influence your health?
Heredity • Heredity is the passing down of traits from parents to child • Examples: eye color, hair color • Some diseases can also be “inherited” or ”run in the family” like sickle cell anemia or type 1 diabetes
Heredity • These diseases can have an influence on your wellness **You have little or no choice about traits you receive from heredity
Environment • Environment is all of the living and non-living things around you • Examples: Air, smoke, climate, school, home, etc. **You have some choice in your environment
C. Relationships 1. Family Influences *Families set standards and expectations for you based on culture and values *This influences your decisions
2. Peer Influence *During your teen years your peers have a greater influence on your decisions *Positive Peer Pressure…write down an example *Negative Peer Pressure…writedown an example
Media Influences • Commercials and advertisements are made to sell you a product. • Companies do not always tell you the truth about the products. • Look through the fancy slogans • Media includes: TV, Magazines, Sports, Movies, Newspapers, Web, etc.
Making Choices About Your Health • You have little control over your heredity (eye color, height, etc) or where you live, or your family, etc. • So what do you have control over?
Making Choices About Your Health • Lifestyle is a set of behaviors by which you live. • You make choices everyday • What will you do? Who will you hang with? Will you complete your work? Will you eat healthy food or junk? How will you respond to friends/teachers/parents/siblings?
Making Choices About Your Health • Attitude is the way you act, think, or feel that causes you to make one choice over another. • “Attitude is a little thing that makes a BIG difference” • What is your attitude towards: playing a sport, doing homework, cleaning your room, playing video games, helping your parents, etc.
Making Choices About Your Health • Preventive Healthcare is taking steps necessary to prevent illness or accidents
Using Life Skills to Improve Health • Life skills are skills that help you deal with situations that can affect your health • Examples of life skills are: • Assessing your health • Decision Making • Communicating Effectively • Practicing Wellness • Setting Goals • Coping • Being a Wise Consumer
6 Steps to Making Decisions • 1. Identify the problem • What is the real problem to be solved? • Is the problem cheating or making your team mad? • 2. Consider Your Values • Values- beliefs that you consider to be of importance • Activity- rank what is most important: • Friends, honesty, working hard, trust
6 Steps to Making Decisions • 3. List the Options • What are ALL possible solutions? • What are the options in this example? • 4. Weigh the Consequences • Consequences the result of an action that you take (may be positive or negative) • For each option above…list the pro’s and con’s • Which is the best decision for you?
6 Steps to Making Decisions • 5. Decide and Act • Decide which option is best for you and follow through with your decision. • Be able to cope with the consequences of your decision • 6. Evaluate Your Decision • Afterwards, ask yourself how it went. • Would you make this same decision in the future? • What would you have done differently? • How can it work out better next time?
6 Steps to Making Decisions • Why do you think it is important to evaluate your decisions? • Its important to reflect on your decisions so you can learn what to do in the future. • We all make mistakes, but by evaluating our actions we can limit mistakes in the future
Now Let’s practice these 6 steps • Get intro groups of 3-4 people and go through the decision making process. • For step 2, list at least 3 values (things of importance) that are at play • For step 3, list 3 ways you could handle the situation • For step 4, list 1 negative and 1 positive consequence of each decision
6 Steps to Making Decisions • Tomorrow you have a Science test that you have not yet studied for. You were out of school for two days so you are really unprepared for the test. Afterschool you have practice from 4:00-6:00pm and then your best friends birthday party that you have been planning for weeks starts at 7:00 and ends at 9:00. You usually go to bed at 9:30 ish.

Goal Setting • Goal setting - the process of working toward something you want to accomplish. • Short-Term goals are tasks that you can accomplish in a short period of time • Long-Term goals are tasks that usually take weeks, months or even years to accomplish • Short-term goals should be made to lead towards long-term goals
Goal Setting • Goals are important and will help us improve our health, family life, social life, fitness, anything! • Accomplishing goals also improves our self-esteem! • Setting goals are important since they will guide our decisions. Working towards a goal keeps us out of trouble and helps us to gain self-esteem and the feeling of accomplishment
