RPL information kit • This is available online • And in hard copy format
Candidates apply for RPL • Complete an application form • Attach a CV outlining training & assessment experience • Certified copies of qualifications • Are allocated to an assessor
What happens next? • RPL assessor contacts candidate by phone • Makes an appointment to plan the assessment
Initial appointment • Assessor and candidate identify the units for RPL • A planning tool is used • Specific evidence requirements are discussed
Usually 3-4 weeks later Candidate brings all the evidence Assessor clarifies, asks questions and checks evidence Second appointment
Assessor can sign offcandidate as competent Document the process and result Process paperwork If all is OK
If not…… • Candidate may have to collect more evidence • May choose to complete an assessment task • May do gap training
Our RPL uses range of methods • Portfolios Product sampling • Demonstrations Practical or written tests • Assessment panels Third party reports • Case studies Interviews • Workplace observations • Pre-prepared reports
The same evidence can be used across units • This can be done via mapping • For example • TAADEL401A • TAADEL402A • TAADES402A All require lesson plans
Big picture • Look at the whole job of a trainer/assessor • Deem competence vs. ticking every box • Don’t place extra hurdles
Third party reports • Useful to authenticate candidates’ skills + knowledge + attitude • Use a template • Official letterhead or email address • Contact number • Person’s title and name
Remember the 5 P’s! • Prior • Planning • Prevents • Piss-poor • Performance
Planning RPL • Be clear up front about the process • Involve the candidate • Use a written planning tool • Line up each unit with elements outlined • Ask questions • Make suggestions
Listen carefully • Questions from a candidate will indicate depth of knowledge • “What do you mean by training packages?” • Offer alternatives • Can’t locate evidence - offer assessment only pathway
Communicate clearly • Allow candidates to make informed choices • Be positive about RPL • Use plain English • Have a written RPL kit/info on website • Ensure consistent message • Ask clarifying questions • Give clear feedback • Be flexible
