  2. Adverbs • Usually end in –ly, but don’t have to. • Modify a verb, adjective, or other adverb • Verb: Speak softly and carry a big stick. • Adjective: My classmates are often silly. • Adverb: Hector left the haunted house screaming quite loudly.

Adverbs • Tell how • The fire spread quickly. • I landed awkwardly when I fell off the trampoline. • Tell when • We are leaving tomorrow. • Justin always talks about his helicopters. • Tell where • My best friend lives nearby. • Please go there and give Maria all of your dinosaurs. • Tell to what extent • Susan emptied her locker completely • I hardly touched my chocolate mousse.

  4. Adverbs • An adverb clause is used to indicate “under what condition” something will take place. • We will win the game if we try hard. • Susie will fail the test unless she studies.

Adverbs • Comparative Adverbs: used when comparing two people, places, or things. • She runs more quickly at school than at soccer practice. • I wish your mashed potatoes were less lumpy than hers. • Superlative Adverbs: indicates the extreme quality of something and is used talking about 3 or more people, places, or things. • My teacher is the most helpful one in the school. • Out of everyone in my family, I eat beans the least often.
