EMMA East 2014(Emma-5)Da Nang Meeting30 0ctober – 3 November 2013 How is the final selection prepared for the Board of Directors ? Nguyen Tien Phung - Marc Diener
Selection will be done on the basis of the seven grades, no longer on the candidate’s application itself By home: • Grades and academic records (0 - 5) • Language proficiency (0 – 5) • Motivation and recommendation (0 – 5) • Social and financial indicator (1 – 3) By host: Feasible? (Yes/No) • Accordance with available teaching (0 - 5) • Mobility achievement (0 - 5) • Expected impact on the programme (0 - 5)
Please cooperate between EU and Asian evaluators during evaluation process! • Try to adjust grading: it is not good if we if one candidate get 5 5 5 2 2 2 2 or converse! • If one has 5 5 5 2 0 …, it would be good if both EU and Asian partners may agree to modify the MP of the candidate • As evaluation is first done by home, in case of lack of time, host may give 3 3 3 to any candidate with a very low grade from home…keeping time for better candidate. • For the best candidates, you will ease the selection process in choosing 5 5 5 …you do not need to rank yourself your best candidates.
Selection on the basis of grades seems to be automatic but is not because of the various balances. • Each number in the mobility table is a separate competition. • For some competition we will receive lots of applications, for others very few…up to, some times, not enough! • Two kinds of implicit balances have to be taken into account: • balance between host universities • balance between genders.
What is the selection method? • We begin with « difficult » mobilities (usuallyTG3 U10 and M11): we take all (if possible) available candidates • Than U6, M6, M11 where there are usually not many candidates • At that point, we already observe unbalance distribution among EU partners and gender. Than we continue in taking the best ones among U10, U34 and M22 (where the number of candidates are large) that can be selected for EU partner with a too small number of candidates or being females. • This gives a first version of the selection and we look at it trying to find for each selected candidate if there is no other ones with a better grade that have not being selected without good reason. • Then the list is ready to be send to the Board of Director for approvals
What will change with cohorts • First year only aS1, euS2, euS3, D18, D36 • We may ask Brussels if we can postpone some scholarship to next cohort, if not enough good applications are available
