Recognizing and Managing Joint Injuries: Fractures and Soft Tissue Injuries

In this lesson, you will learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of joint injuries, including fractures and soft tissue injuries. You will also understand how overuse and accidental injuries can occur. The lesson covers topics such as dislocations, shin splints, tennis elbow, and overuse fractures.

  1. By the end of the lesson you will recognise:- The basic signs & symptoms of Joint Injuries Fractures Soft Tissue Injuries

  2. Overuse Sports Injuries happen in 2 ways Accidental

  3. Blood Injuries Bruising Fractures Dislocation Sudden stress on the body

  4. Shin Splints Stress Fracture Tennis Elbow Overuse

  5. Fractures A Break or crack in the bone.

  6. The limb may look deformed compared to other limb. Bleeding inside leads to swelling. Bruising develops later Movement not normal There are 2 types of fractures A Closed or Simple Fracture = Bone is cracked but skin not damaged Casualty may hear or feel a snap Pain and tenderness around the injury. Moving makes it worse

  7. An Open or Compound fracture = Skin is damaged and bone may stick out More obvious!!

  8. Open Closed

  9. For arm fractures a sling can be made and be used for support. Be careful Call 999 Support the limb above and below the fracture using towels, cushions or folded clothes Do not move the casualty or try to straighten the limb What do I do ?

  10. TwistedAnkle Dislocation Tennis / Golf elbow Torn cartilage Joint injuries

  11. Dislocated Dislocation Normal ACCIDENTAL

  12. The joint may look deformed and casualty can’t move it Bleeding inside leads to swelling. Bruising develops later Movement not normal Dislocation A bone is pulled out of its normal position. Usual places = shoulder, thumb, fingers, elbow and ankle Severe pain at or near the joint.

  13. For elbow dislocations a sling can be made and be used for support. Be careful Call 999 Support the joint using towels, cushions or folded clothes Do not try to reinsert the bone to the joint What do I do ?

  14. Swelling appears around the joint. Bruising follows later Pain and tenderness around the joint. Movement makes it worse TwistedAnkle The ligament at the joint is stretched and torn ACCIDENTAL

  15. Pain on one side of the knee Torn cartilage ACCIDENTAL It may swell that day or the next morning The joint may lock and not straighten fully

  16. Get the casualty to a doctor Rest the injury until it recovers. Surgery may be required Use an ice pack to reduce the swelling What do I do ?

  17. Tennis / Golf Elbow Caused by overuse of muscles in the lower arm OVERUSE The bony bump on the outside of the elbow is inflamed, tender and painful The bony bump on the inside of the elbow is inflamed, tender and painful

  18. Physiotherapy. Steroid injection Rest the injury until it recovers. It could take weeks! Use an ice pack to reduce the swelling What can they do ?

  19. STRAINS BRUISES CARTILAGE SPRAINS CUTS & GRAZES Soft tissue injuries

  20. 2ND DEGREE 1ST DEGREE 3RD DEGREE SPRAINS STRETCHING A LIGAMENT Ligaments connect bone to bone

  21. STRAINS TEARING A MUSCLE OR TENDON Tendons connect muscle to bone

  22. DAMAGE TO THE CUSHIONING ON THE ENDS OF THE BONES CARTILAGE OVERUSE

  23. A SCRAPING OF THE SKIN A BREAKING OF THE SKIN CUTS & GRAZES

  24. BLEEDING INTO THE INJURED PART BRUISES A FALL OR A HARD OBJECT

  25. = REST = ICE = COMPRESSION = ELEVATION What do I do ? HOW TO TREAT GET OFF THE INJURY . GIVE IT TIME TO HEAL R ICE PACK ON FOR 10 MINS THEN OFF FOR 10 MINS AND REPEAT I C FIRM BANDAGE ON THE INJURY E LIFT IT UP TO STOP SWELLING

  26. = HEAT = ALCOHOL = RIGOUROUS EXERCISE = MASSAGE HOW NOT TO TREAT H INCREASES BLEEDING A INCREASES SWELLING R M INCREASE SWELLING
