  3. Chernobyl Disaster 26 April 1986 Worst Nuclear disaster to date Cost billions of dollars to clean Up and recover from Stressed the economy to breaking point

  4. The First Country Leaves… Estonia, 1990 First country to officially leave the Soviet Union Led to the succession of all other Soviet controlled areas

  5. Fall of the Berlin Wall The Wall fell towards the end of the Cold War Directly afterwards, the east German currency was abandoned This led to massive burnings of the East German Mark, as it was now worthless

  6. A Last Ditch Attempt…. On August 19, 1991, several military leaders seized control of the government They kidnapped Gorbachev and placed him under house arrest After three days, the coup fell apart and Gorbachev was released Very end of the Soviet Union

  7. Dissolution In late 1991, the Soviet Union fell apart It was now a totally voluntary organization The name was changed to “The Commonwealth of Independent states” The flag was also changed to represent the new union.
