Photosynthesis Ch 8-1 Ch 8-2
Photosynthesis • When I plant a seed that weighs 1 gram, how does it grow into a huge sequioa tree which weighs tons? • Where does the extra weight come from? The soil? The water? • Dutch Physician Jan Van Helmont • Soil weighed constantly 75 grams • Water was the only thing he added • Joseph Priestley • Observed a plant keep a flame alive underneath a glass dome • Jan Ingenhousz figured out that plants produce oxygen in light • Photosynthesis • Plants convert the energy of sunlight into the energy in the chemical bonds of carbohydrates
Requirements for Photosynthesis • Sunlight – different wavelengths of visible light are needed for photosynthesis • Autotrophs – organisms that can make their own source of food. Ex. Plants • Heterotroph – organisms that obtain energy from another source. Ex. People • Pigments – absorb the specific wavelengths (colors) from light • Chlorophyll is the primary pigment in plants. • Energy storing compounds • ATP (adenosine triphosphate) – power currency of the cell
