  1. Announcing the Cooperative Biological Engagement Program’s • 2012 Applied Biosafety and Biosecurity Project • The need for sustainable safety and security measures is prevalent throughout the world, and in particular Central Asia and the Caucuses. Empirical data is needed to support the rationale for the development of future guidelines to ensure that all biorisk management measures are implemented in a practical and sustainable manner while providing the necessary level of protection to laboratory personnel, surrounding community and environment. To address these needs, the Cooperative Biological Engagement Program (CBEP) is collaborating with the Biosafety Association of Central Asia and the Caucausus (BACAC) and the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) to promote, fund and publish short-term, small-scale (not to exceed 50,000 USD) research projects in applied biosafety and biosecurity. • Potential projects may include studies to develop, design, and validate: • Novel methods for containment of high-risk pathogens and prevention of disease • transmission • Application of locally-adapted laboratory safety, security, and engineering practices • and risk mitigation strategies • Metrics to measure the success and effectiveness of a biorisk management system • Guidelines for safety and security practices in field settings • Desired outcomes include presentation of results at the 2012 meeting of the Biosafety Association of Central Asia and the Caucuses (BACAC) and peer-reviewed publication. • Project Timeline: • Sept 27 2011: Proposal Writing BACAC Preconference Course • Sept 28 2011: Official project announcement at BACAC • Oct 31 2011: Applied Biosafety Project short proposal submissions due • Nov 7 2011: Applied Biosafety Project proposal selection • Dec 7 2011: Applied Biosafety Project full proposal submissions due • Feb-May 2012: Applied Biosafety Project proposal execution • June 15 2011: Abstract submission to BACAC organization • July 31 2012: Final Applied Biosafety Project report due • Sept 2012: Applied Biosafety Project presentation at 2012 BACAC • POC: Michelle McKinney, Biorisk Lead, CBEP (michelle.mckinney@dtra.mil) • Patricia Delarosa, PhD CBSP RBP(delarosa_mary@bah.com)
