Who are we? NSW - Bathurst & Kelso Production facilities VIC- Echuca & Pakenham Production facilities TAS - Ulverstone & Devonport Production facilities Top Cut Meats – across Australia Mr. Chips - NZ
Energy Efficiency at Simplot – why do it? • It’s the right thing to do • Energy prices are increasing • Directly impacts our bottom-line • Can be the single-largest “uncontrolled” expense • Energy impacts our Greenhouse Gas Emissions and potential carbon cost • Government compliance
So, what does Simplot do? • Build the business case for energy efficiency • “The cleanest, cheapest, and greenest GJ is the one never used” • Adopted the JR Simplot - USA Parent Company Goal “25x10” • Reduce our Energy Intensity (total energy per unit of production) 25% over 10 years from base year 2008 • Leverage opportunities & collaborate • Track, monitor, and continuous improvement
Leadership at the beginning • In the beginning there was an Energy Efficiency Manager • Awareness sessions- Supply Chain Senior Mgt • EEO Coordinators appointed • Energy Teams formed across sites • Energy Efficiency Manager kept pushing the agenda, he never gave up!
Leadership at the beginning • We partnered with Energetics • We assessed all sites and began undertaking projects & activities • Started to standardise • Standard meeting agenda & minute format • Standard project tracking register • Developed procedures • Developed energy models for sites • Held two day Verification workshop with CLO • Began to issue a monthly Energy Report
Leadership now • Energy Efficiency Manager attended JR Simplot Sustainability Conference – Oct 2010 • 3 days energy efficiency in USA • He came back even more enthusiastic! • Simplot Australia Supply Chain adopted “25 in 10” • Changed site role from EEO Coordinator to • “Energy Champion” • 3 Critical Elements • Must be passionate, almost fanatical • Respected by all • Time to do it • Job Description added to Energy Champions PD
Leadership now • “Energy Efficiency Steering Committee” formed • National Manufacturing Mgr • Supply Chain Development Mgr • Corp Project Engineer • Project Mgr Energy Efficiency • QSR Marketing Mgr • Energetics Rep • Much better focus and ownership
Leadership now • June 2011 Simplot Aust invited to join global JRS • “25 in 10” program • August this year our Board endorsed invitation and a corporate announcement made • When MD’s and Boards get interested – others get fascinated!!!!!!
People • Got to have a culture of energy efficiency • Culture eats strategy every time! • Energy Policy- signed by MD
People • Sharing ideas across the Pacific • Engineering • Energy Steering Committee • Don’t reinvent wheels
People • Production and Maintenance representatives on site energy teams • Energy notice boards set up at sites • Weekly energy report- site usage
People • Every project is an energy efficiency project • They all use energy! • Project guidelines established • Capital project Sign off sheet
People • Energy efficiency training • Developed some site specific sustainability modules • Now looking at corporate training modules
People • Site Survey • In the process of conducting a business wide energy survey • Why- see what interest there is and what info we can provide • Get people interested in energy efficiency at home and at work
People • Survey info so far (still more sites to go)
Our journey continues! • “It’s not the light • you are turning off, • It’s the light-bulb • you are turning on.” • Dave Jones, Caldwell Plant -US Energy Champion Saving Energy makes cents! They all add up
