Demography One reason care services vary is as a result of demography. Demography is the study of human populations, based on factors such as age and race. Can you think of eight more factors? Discuss, then click on the images. Marriages Divorces Birth rates Economic status ? Demography factors ? ? gender Level of education Death rates Life expectancy These factors are used to plan services for the population such as health and welfare, education and housing. Using demography to plan local services There are six main demographic characteristics used when planning health, social care and children’s services. These are: • Age profile of the population • Level of unemployment • Level of deprivation • Number of single parents • Level of disability • Health needs Read this description of Caerphilly. Which is the main characteristic used and how does this affect service planning? Caerphilly has an overall health profile that is generally worse than the average for Wales. One particular factor is the increasing number of older people in Caerphilly.
