  1. Probability Vocabulary Review

  2. Probability • Probability – the chance or likelihood that an event will happen (occur). • On the spinner to the right, all outcomes have an equally likely chance of occurring!

  3. Outcomes • Impossible – there is no chance for the event to occur. On the spinner below, it would be impossible to spin a “9.”

  4. Outcomes • Not likely, less likely, unlikely – there is less than 1/2 probability of the event happening. • On the spinner below, it is unlikely that you would spin a “1”. Since there is only 1 space that contains a 1 and 7 spaces that do not.

  5. Outcomes • Equally likely – there is an equal chance of the event happening or not happening. • On the spinner below, there is an equal chance of spinning a 1, 2, 3, or 4 and an equal chance of not spinning a 1, 2, 3, or 4! • There are a total of 8 outcomes. 4 favorable and 4 not favorable.

  6. Outcomes • Likely – there is greater that ½ chance of the event occurring. • On the spinner below, it is likely that you would spin a number greater than 2!

  7. Outcomes • Certain – the event will happen. There is no chance that the event will not occur. • On the spinner below, it is certain that you will spin a number 1 through 8.

  8. Number Line Representation 0 ½ 1 On “0” – impossible Between 0 and ½ - unlikely On “½”- equally likely Between ½ and 1 – likely On “1” - certain

  9. Prediction • Prediction – a guess about what will happen in the future.
