  2. What is advertising? Advertising is the method used by businesses, companies and other organisations to promote their goods and services to the public. The ultimate aim of advertising is to increase sales, by showing these services in a good light

  3. Catchphrases Advertising is designed to make an impression on its audience. Sometimes an ad only has a few moments to grab the audiences attention before they turn the page, change the channel, drive past or click to a new screen Some of the most successful advertising campaigns involve catchphrases or slogans that have become so ingrained I the community’s consciousness that they are almst as well known as the products themselves. Do you know these ones? ‘Just do it’ - ? ‘Oh what a feeling!’ - ? ‘Which bank’ - ? ‘If you drink and drive, you’re a bloody idiot’ - ?

  4. Persuasive language Any language that triggers an emotional response or attempts to change the attitudes of a viewer, reader or listener, is known as persuasive language. Advertisers often use persuasive language very deliberately in order to get a positive response in the audience. If people feel that the product or service will benefit them, they are more likely to want to purchase it

  5. adjectives Adjectives tell us more about the noun (in this case, the product) they are describing. They are describing words that tell us what kind, what colour, how many or which one. They help us achieve a more complete picture. For example: The luxurious seats make cinema viewing a pleasure This is a beautiful gold locket, which would be perfect for Mother’s day This giant, polished oak table would suit any dining room

  6. adverbs Adverbs add to the verb. They tell us more about the verb. They tell us how, when where or why a thing is done. In advertising, an adverb tells us ore about the performance of a product, for example how well it cuts, drives or cleans.

  7. Target audience An advertising campaign is only successful if it reaches the target audience, or the people that the advertisers are hoping to reach. An ad for a Barbie doll is unlikely to appear in a DIY magazine, or a ad for a new kitchen mixer is unlikely to appear in Kidzone magazine for example. Take a minute now, to think about who your target audience is…
