1. “In” Entry: 8/29/12 Get your binder!!! Write: What types of personal protective equipment (things we wear for safety) do we use in this class? List as many as you can.

4. Eye Safety Personal Protective Equipment: Goggles • Goggles are made of special material that can protect your eyes from punctures or splashes • Goggles are to be worn over eye glasses • Wear goggles at all times when anyone is handling liquids, powders, or glassware

5. Skin & Clothes safety • Personal Protective Equipment: Apron • The apron will protect your body from splashes or chemicals • Should be tied snuggly to prevent from catching on things while walking • Wear your apron whenever using chemicals or liquids

6. Fire safety You will not be using fire for your experiments. I may do some demos that require a flame. • Fire Extinguisher: on wall in back of room • Directions on the side of the container • Use for small fires, especially any fires that have grease • Fire Blanket: on wall in back of room • Use if you catch on fire • Wrap yourself in the blanket and stop, drop, and roll • Fire Alarm: • Major fire in classroom • Exit class immediately and pull fire alarm at the end of the hall

7. Fresh Water Can be used to treat minor burns on the hands and arms or as an agent to wash minor cuts that can be treated in the classroom Most of our burns and cuts can be taken care of in the classroom. I may send you to the nurse depending on what happened. She may have an ointment or bigger bandage – so don’t worry if I send you.

8. Eye wash station The eyewash station is meant for washing and cleaning out anything that might have splashed into your eye We are in the process of having our eyewash serviced, so our sink would be considered our eye wash station until further notice Hold eyes open with hands (so you don’t blink) for 5 minutes to wash out eye. I will call nurse to provide you additional medical care.

9. What if I spill a chemical? • Tell teacher immediately • Let me know if you got any on your skin or in your eyes • Rinse under running water for 5 minutes • I will call the nurse if the chemical has the potential to burn • We most likely, 99% likely, will not be using anything that will burn your skin • Do not pick up any broken glass with your hands! • I will sweep up any broken glass • If I am not available, use only the broom and dustpan

10. Horseplay & the Lab Slips and falls are usually the result of people not being careful in the classroom There is no running or fast walking at any time! The floor could be wet. Any behavior that I perceive as horseplay will be disciplined immediately! Your lab grade may be affected because you are expected to demonstrate lab safety according to the State of Texas.

11. Eating & Drinking It is in your best interest that you do not have any food or drink in the classroom. Why? • Any residue of chemicals can get on your food or drink • People often put used tissues on their desk • Water can spill and cause a fall If you need a snack or water for a medical reason, talk to me about it in private and we can arrange a place for you to do that.

12. Bodily Fluids Common: blood & vomit Blood: Do NOT touch any blood that might have dripped onto the floor or table. • Either I or another member of our school will properly clean up the spill – no matter how small or large it is Vomit: Do NOT touch or walk through any vomit. • We will call the front office and have someone clean it up

13. nosebleeds Nosebleeds happen, especially as the weather changes. If you get a nose bleed during class: • Quietly get up and get some tissues • Silently let me know you have a nosebleed and I will have another person escort you to the nurse • If some blood dropped onto the table or floor, let me know so I can take care of it. • Wash your hands once your nosebleed has stopped Do NOT: • Put bloody tissues back on the table • Do not return to the classroom until you have washed your hands

14. Homework – Due Tomorrow • What will I wear to protect my eyes? • Why will I wear an apron? • If a drop a glass beaker and it breaks, what do you do?
