What is virtual reality? • Virtual reality refers to computer technologies that use virtual reality devicesto generate realistic images, sounds and other sensations that simulates a user's physical presence in a virtual or imaginary environment.
How does VR Work? • VR Headsets behave in a similar way to a pair of 3D goggles in that they display two images. Ordinary 3D goggles show a single image but in 3D where as virtual reality contains polarised lenses which show two images, one lens for each eye to view. The system is connected to a computer which sends signals to adjust the images seen by the wearer as they move around their environment.
WHO uses it? • VR has been used for military training and flight simulation training to put people in the moment without actually being there, so they are able to learn from there mistakes without serious consequences. • NASA has used VR technology for twenty years. Most notable is their use of immersive VR to train astronauts while they are still on Earth. • PlayStation, HTC, Microsoft and Google (and many other companies) have made virtual reality platforms made for gaming, such as the Kinect, Google cardboard and the Vive.
How will this benefit us in the future? • Virtual reality will be used as a new form of entertainment as it will allow us to make a new way of experiencing film, art and digital media. VR will also be used as a learning device that will allow us to make mistakes without major consequences.
