Background on Ancient Greek Theatre • The word Theatre comes from Theatronmeaning “seeing place” • The word Drama comes from the word Dranmeaning “to do” • Greek theatre means Athens during the fifth century BCE • There were lots of plays, comedies, and commentaries left in fragments but there were really only forty-three plays that were really intact

Start of Ancient Greek Theatre • Ancient Greek Theatre began as a religious ceremony • It’s a mixture of Myth, Legend, Philosophy, Social Commentary, Poetry, Dance, Music, Public participation, and Visual splendor • They focused on God Dionysus • Sexuality • Wine • Fertility (Main Duty) • Agriculture
