  1. Last week… • Recap from last week.

  2. Today • We are going to learn some history about Benjamin Franklin to gain perspective on his written work. • We are going to discuss some of the “sayings” he wrote!

  3. Benjamin Franklin 1706-1790

  4. Ben Franklin • He was born in Boston. • Like the Puritans, Franklin was interested in self-improvement and the idea of laboring industriously in a calling. • He had a preference for the “plain style” of writing.

  5. Ben Franklin • Just as Puritanism was dying out, he left Boston at the age of 17. • His Puritan ideas stayed with him though.

  6. Ben Franklin • With his clever wit and his hard working personality, he changed himself from the poorly educated son of a candle and soap maker to a world-famous scientist, diplomat, philosopher, and writer.

  7. Ben Franklin– Fun Fact! • Franklin is often viewed as the epitome of the American Dream. • Through determination and hard work, anyone can succeed.

  8. Ben Franklin – Fun Fact! • Franklin believed firmly that public service for the good of all is the most valuable service to God.

  9. Ben Franklin • Franklin’s interests and accomplishments: • He was a Philadelphia printer. • Ran a magazine and a newspaper • Founded a debating club

  10. Ben Franklin • Invented/Discovered/Improved: • Lightning rod • Bifocal glasses • Device for lifting books off high shelves • Rocking chair that could swat flies • Musical instrument called the armonica • Stove

  11. Ben Franklin • Studied • Earthquakes • Ocean currents • Wind • He helped improve the city’s: • Pavements • Street lighting • Sanitation • Fire companies • police

  13. Ben Franklin • Other accomplishments: • Addressed the English House of Commons on the Stamp Act • Served as first postmaster general of America • Assisted in creating the Declaration of Independence and Constitution

  14. Ben Franklin • He won honorary degrees from Harvard and Yale and a gold medal from the English Royal Academy.

  15. Ben Franklin – Fun Fact! • He also received degrees from three British Universities.

  16. Ben Franklin– Fun Fact!! • According to one story, the Continental Congress was afraid to let him draft the Declaration of Independence because he might slip a joke into it!

  17. Ben Franklin – Fun Fact! • It is reported that after signing the Declaration, Franklin joked that everyone had better hang out together, or they would hang separately.

  18. Ben Franklin • He began his Autobiography describing his rise from “poverty and obscurity…. To a state of affluence and some degree of reputation in the world.” • It was never completed!

  19. Ben Franklin– Hypocrite?! He said… But then he also said… Called it “a guide quite blind” He told a doctor “half the lives you save are not work saving…” • He praised reason • He wished to better mankind

  21. Poor Richard’s Almanack • He compiled a collection of witty quotations and put them into this Almanack. Look to page 86.

  22. Graph • Choose 3 of the proverbs from the Almanack. • On the study guide, write the proverb and how it applies to life. Why is it important?
