Lessons Learned Kevin Anderson, Wichita VA
RJ Dole VAMROC Lessons Learned • Hardest part is getting off “Go” • Use third parties to verify needs • Email groups and internet are great resources for collaboration • EPA and state regulatory agencies have voluntary compliance programs- Great resources, use them! • Educate employees and supervisors • Tracking is very important; keep it simple
RJ Dole VAMROC Lessons Learned • Laboratory and pharmacy implemented ways two very different ways to deal with certain wastes; both are very effective • Involve key members in environmental management system. Enable champions. • Interdepartmental communication is very important
RJ Dole VAMROC Lessons Learned • Recycling is very important part of any Waste Program • First separate NHW from HW • Do not mix wastes, especially listed wastes with NHW • Ask others how they handle wastes
RJ Dole VAMROC Lessons Learned-What to do • Pharmacy- gather and sort system for listed wastes • Pharmacy- use return system for nearly and outdated pharmaceuticals • Pharmacy- rotate stock from caches
RJ Dole VAMROC Lessons Learned-What to do • Laboratory- found ways to reduce amounts of chemicals stored and used; new equipment, discontinuation of old processes • Found ways to reduce RMG
RJ Dole VAMROC Lessons Learned-What to do • Other waste streams- reduce by controlling buying at purchasing end; user justify amount and needs of HM and take responsibility for waste costs • Monitor HM amounts on hand through quarterly inventory • Find less hazardous alternatives, when appropriate • Find methods that use less HM, or consume all in processes
RJ Dole VAMROC Lessons Learned-What to do • Systems are continually updated and monitored for potential improvements or problems • As opportunities or changes to processes arise, take appropriate steps • Let management know of major changes, and give periodic updates of program performance
