Jem • Jem confessed to Scout that the night he went to fetch his trousers he found them neatly folded and mended on the Radley fence. • It was as if someone knew Jem’s mind. • Jem says you only learn something in school from the 6th grade. • Jem wants to write a letter of thanks for all the things they have received and place it in the knothole.
Jem (continued) • Jem asks Mr Radley if he put cement in the knothole. • Jem asks Atticus if the tree is dying. • Jem cries a little bit by himself when he hears the answer from Atticus.
The knothole in the Oak tree • Jem and Scout found grey twine in it. • They found two carved images in soap. Mr Nathan Radley • He tells Jem he filled the knothole of the tree with cement. • He says that is what you do when a tree is dying.
Atticus • Atticus says in his opinion the tree with the knothole is not dying. • When he hears that Mr Nathan says it was dying he said Mr Nathan must know his own trees better than Atticus.
