  2. Ziele (goals) • Expressing likes & dislikes • Adding vocabulary about free time activities.

  3. the word “gern” The German word gern is used as an adverb. That means, to use it correctly, you also need a “verb” When you add gern to a sentence, it means that the subject of the sentence enjoys doing what he or she is doing. A somewhat close English translation might be “gladly” or “happily”

  4. Asking what someone likes to do • Was machst du gern? • What do you like to do? • Schwimmst du gern? • Do you like to swim? • Was macht ihr gern? • What do you all like to do?

  5. Telling someone what you like to do • Ich spiele gern Fußball. • I like to play soccer. • Nein, nicht so gern. • No, not so much. • Wir schwimmen sehr gern. • We like to swim a lot.

  6. Wortschatz Ich sammle Briefmarken. Ich zeichne. I collect stamps. I draw. Ich bastle viel. I do a lot of crafts.

  7. Wortschatz Wir hören Musik. Wir besuchen Freunde. We listen to music. We visit friends. Wir sehen fern. We watch TV.

  10. Fragebogen • Write 10 questions you could ask someone else about their interests. They should be yes or no questions, like… • Schwimmst du gern? • Kochst du gern? • Besuchst du gern Freunde? • Schreibst du gern? • To use the right verb form, add an -st to the stem. Be careful, the following verbs are irregular: fernsehen, tanzen, lesen, laufen and fahren. See the chalkboard for the correct forms.

  13. Verb forms • Use the chart to help you find the correct form of each verb. • Change your ten answers to sentences. • Schwimmst du gern? Elke Nein • Elke schwimmt nicht gern. • Elke tanzt gern. • Elke wandert gern. • Elke segelt nicht gern.

  14. the formal “Sie” • In addition to du and ihr (which are both informal), there is a third word for you. It is Sie. The “S” should be capitalized. • The word Sie is used both for singular and plural. • Look at your chart for the appropriate form. What do you notice?
