    2. Purpose This presentation is geared to give general information on the sport of soccer. History, terminology, and equipment are the key points to this presentation. If you are interested in learning more please feel free to ask any questions. Thank you.

    3. General History The modern form of soccer originated in England in the early 1830's. The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. When soccer first started in the United States, it was played primarily by schoolboy and college teams, and was largely an upper-class game.

    4. Women in Soccer For most of the first sixty years of the 1900's, women’s soccer was confined to physical education class, informal pickup games and college intramural competition. Women’s soccer got off to a fairly late start in this country. Women’s leagues existed in Europe as far back as 1930, and international competitions date back to the 1950s.

    5. Women in Soccer (cont.) In the United States, however, organized women’s soccer did not take root until the late 1970’s, and even this was partly an outgrowth of the Title IX legislation of 1972 mandating gender equity in education. The first national women’s league did not launch until 1995, and it was not until 2001 that the first professional women’s league made its debut.

    9. Equipment The Soccer Jersey Soccer jerseys come in many styles and colors. Some styles date back to the early days of soccer and some have a more modern look.

    10. Equipment Soccer Shorts Soccer shorts come in many styles and colors also. They are designed for comfort and durability

    11. Equipment Soccer Socks Soccer socks typically will come up to just below the knee. They help protect the legs and also can be quite colorful.

    12. Equipment The soccer shoe Soccer shoes are especially designed for the sport of soccer. Some have cleats and some are made for indoor soccer.

    13. Equipment Shin Guard In the heat of the game, having good shin guards is very important. They need to be strong but light weight and durable.
