  7. History • Invented in December, 1891 by James Naismith • First formal rules were devised in 1892 • Teams originally had 9 players • 1897-98: teams of 5 became standard • Became popular in both the U.S and Canada

  8. History Cont.. • The first pro league, the National Basketball League, was formed in 1898 • Only lasted 5 years before disbanding • jh : First original team • -Dominated basketball until 1936 :founded in 1927 • -Known for fancy ball handling

History Cont.. • 1949: The National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America merged to create the National Basketball Association (NBA) • Boston Celtics: dominated from the late 1950s through the 1960s • 1970s: NBA dropped in popularity • Larry Bird, Magic Johnson brought back the excitement in the 1980’s

Important Terms Assist Defense Fast Break A pass to a teammate, who then scores Team trying to stop the other team from scoring Dribbling or passing the ball towards your basket before the defense can set up Air Ball Dunk Man-to-Man A shot that completely misses the rim and backboard A defensive strategy where everyone guards an assigned player To throw the ball down into the basket with the hand above the level of the rim

  15. Important Terms Cont.. Offense: the team trying to score Zone Defense: defensive strategy where everyone guards an area instead of a player (2-1-2, 2-3) Turnover: Any loss of the ball without a shot being taken

Violations • Results in a change of possession with the team in bounding the ball at the side line opposite where the infringement took place • Traveling: walking or running with ball, without dribbling • 3 Seconds: when an offensive player stands in the key (free throw-lane), for more than 3 seconds • Double Dribble: when a player dribbles the ball with 2 hands or dribbles the ball, stops, then starts dribbling again

Fouls • Results in one or more free throws awarded to the opposing team • Blocking: impeding the progress of an opponent by extending one or both arms horizontally or getting in the path of a moving player • Charging: running into a stationary player while you are moving with the ball • Hacking: when the player hits the arm or hand of the person holding the ball • Holding: when the player holds the person with or without the ball

  18. Skills • Boxing out: a player’s position between an opposing player and the basket to obtain a better rebounding position • Dribbling: bouncing the ball with 1 hand using your fingertips • Passing: moving the ball by throwing, bouncing, handing, or rolling it to another player

  19. Skills Cont.. • Shooting: throwing the ball to make a basket • Pivoting: stepping once or more in any direction with the same foot while holding the other foot at its initial point • Rebounding: the recovering of a shot that bounces off the backboard or the rim

  22. Scoring • 2 Point Field Goal: a shot made from anywhere inside the 3 point arc • 3 Point Field Goal: a shot made from anywhere outside the 3 point arc • Free Throw: 1 point is awarded to an unguarded shot taken from behind the free throw line while the clock is stopped

  24. Length of Game • Middle/High School: 4 quarters, 8 minutes long • College: 2 twenty minute halves • NBA: 4 twelve minute halves Overtime if necessary
