First Quantitative Variable: Ear Length • The unit of measurement for this variable is INCHES. • A few possible values for this first quantitative variable are 2IN. 2 ½ IN. and 3IN.
Second quantitative variable is Pinky Length • The unit of measurement is INCHES. • A few possible quantitative variables are 2IN. 3IN. & 2 ½IN.
Purpose: Find if correlation exists between the pinky finger and ear for a particular person. For the study we randomly selected and measured a pinky and an ear from each person using a measuring tape.
Summary Statistics • First Variable: Pinky Length • Mean: 2.45556 • Standard Deviation: 0.432 • Five Number Summary: Minimum: 1.6 First Quartile: 2.2 Median: 2.4 Third Quartile: 2.55 Maximum: 3.75 • Range: 2.15 • Mode: 2.4 • Outliers: 1.6, 3.75
Summary Statistics Cont. • Second Variable: Ear Length • Mean (pinky size): 2.43333 • Standard Deviation: 0.482 • Five Number Summary: Minimum: 1.6 First Quartile: 2.2 Median: 2.4 Third Quartile: 2.5 Maximum: 3.75 • Range: 2.15 • Mode: 2.5 • Outliers: 1.6, 3.75
X axis: Ear Length Y Axis: Pinky Length Scatter Plots
Conclusion • The study did show a significant correlation between pinky length and ear length. • Our correlation coefficient is above this (at 0.862) and qualifies as being statistically significant. (Critical Value was .325) • So in answer to our question there is a significant correlation between pinky lengths and ear lengths.
