Henry of Navarre • French nobleman • Henry was in line to be the king however he was Huguenot so he had to fight what he want • He fought through Catholic troops to become king • He soon converted to Catholicism and was accepted by the people. • He was crowned Henry IV and reigned between 1553-1610.
What happened in The Edict of Nantes • The Edict of Nantes were created by King Henry IV to help make peace • Gave Huguenots (French Calvinist protestant )some freedom to worship • Were able to hold office positions • Could rule 200 towns where Huguenots The “one king, one law, one religion” idea was gone with this edict • Catholicism was still the official religion of France but you weren’t forced to be Catholic.
Who was involved • Henry of Navarre was a French nobleman who was next in line to be the king, but he was Huguenot, a French Calvinist protestant • He had to fight through Catholic troops to become king, he eventually became king.
Religious Disunity in Europe • The Edict of Nantes had to be issued because there were religious wars occurring between Catholics and Huguenots in France • France was broken up into two different religions. King Henry VI decided that Huguenots could worship anything they want even if its ran by a Catholic Government.
