Newcastle-Grenoble Joint Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) EDAMBA Annual Meeting Warsaw 2009
A Solid Foundation • A long-standing relationship between GEM and NUBS based on research interests and personal contacts. • An initial Newcastle-only degree delivered in collaboration with GEM. • A focus on Innovation, Technology, and Change, i.e. Drawing on the strength of shared research interests. • A DBA degree rather than a PhD degree: • establishing a common ground, • discarding the constraints of both systems, • a licence to create a new entity taking the best from each partner.
A Joint Programme • Not just in the name: • Joint ownership • Joint execution • Joint responsibility • A demanding proposition: • Reconciling differences • Accepting dependencies • Developing new solutions • A worthwhile pursuit: • Developing a unique degree • Mutual learning • A truly international programme: • An Anglo-French degree (currently run by a Greek and a Pole) • Students from all parts of the world • International faculty
The Challenge of Difference • HE system differences • All that was said about the Bologna dilemma of diversity v. convergence by Prof Ewa Chmielecka applies • Institutional differences • Quality standards, policies and procedures • Strategies and resources • Vision and direction of the degree • Culture and practice
Spanning Boundaries • Student-centred integration • Programme structure • Two Degree Programme Directors • Joint Management Board • Quarterly meetings • Developing and cultivating relationships: • Students • Heads of Schools • Supervisors and other faculty • Administration • Negotiating practice
Rewards • Successful, accomplished, culturally and professionally diverse students • Excellent reviews from students • Dynamic, growing, unique programme • Engagement with practice • Internationalization • Differentiation • Faculty development
