(Yah-weh) LORD Jehovah • In the Old Testament Yahweh occurs 6519 times. Used more than any other name for God. • It denotes the omnipotence of God, He is a despot, an absolute ruler.
“YHWH” • This is God’s name which (by Jewish tradition) is too holy to voice and is actually spelled without vowels. • It is referred to as the tetragrammaton, (which simply means the four letters).
During the third century A.D. the Jewish people stopped saying this name in fear of violating the commandment, “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.” (Exodus 20:7)
God used many compound names beginning with “YHWH” as a prefix to describe His person, power and character.
The first time Jehovah-jireh is used in scripture is in Genesis 22. It is translated “the LORD will provide”
The first time we see God as our Jehovah-jirehwe see a father offering his onlysonon Mount Moriah. • Mount Moriah was also significant because it is where Solomon built the house of Jehovah, or the temple. Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where [the LORD] had appeared to his father David.(II Chronicles 3:1a)
Every templesacrifice for sin would echo Abraham’s words Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.”(Genesis 22:14) • Every lamb, every goat, every sacrifice would point to the one ultimate sacrifice.
Since it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins, God prepared a bodyfor His Son. 4For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 5Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, “SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU HAVE NOT DESIRED, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME.”(Hebrews 10:4-5)
When Jehovah took His son and laid Him on the cross there was no voice from heaven to stop death’shand... …no ram was in the thicket.
“It will be provided” can be translated literally • “it will be seen” • The word for provide, “jireh”, in the Old Testament literally means, “to see” • When Jehovah sees, He responds.
He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?(Romans 8:32)
31“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”(Matthew 6:31-33)
Whatever your need, His name is Jehovah-jireh!
