If you want to make your instructor “happy,”then consider the following information • Use a specific thesis statement • Refrain from beginning too many sentences with the phrase, “I know,” “I believe,” or “I think” • Unless it is a self reflection or personal writing assignment • Be judicious in your use of semicolons ; • Be judicious in your use of dashes - • Avoid randomly adding on to your complete thoughts
Wait! There is more! • Clarify vague or indefinite references • Check for “subject – verb” agreement • http://www.apastyle.org/learn/faqs/index.aspx • Check for “subject – pronoun” agreement • http://www.apastyle.org/learn/faqs/index.aspx • Do not use contractions! • Move your topic sentences/key ideas/claims to the start of a paragraph or main idea • Then use evidence and analysis to support that claim • “Heighten” your language • Be cautious with your synonym button
There are just a few more….. • Stay away from “actually” • Go through your paper and remove all extra words (e.g. actually, really, like-unless it’s a simile, and certainly) • Hunt (1915) argues…… vs. Correct! The writer, Hunt, he argues… Incorrect! • Be consistent in your use of tense. • CITE SOURCES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • Be certain to answer the why question. • Be certain that your thesis statement and your summary statement reflect the same claims/ideas

This is GREAT • Many people travel from all over the world just to experience the magic of Disneyland. The combination of all types of different people interacting with one another make Disneyland the optimal place to view the various branches of communication. It is often difficult to notice all of the subtle parts of the communication process, however, this assignment gave me the opportunity to focus on a specific example and completely dissect it. I noticed many different parts of communication on my visit but none more evident than an incident between a husband and wife getting on [a] ride with their three children. One parent had to go on the ride with one [child], while the other [parent] had to wait with the two younger [children]. From this short interaction between this couple and their children, I was able to notice different concepts of communication like multitasking, haptics, defensive listening, repeating, and civility. • McGregor, J. (2014). The Countless Communication Concepts at Disneyland, • Professor Shore’s HCOM100 10a Application paper 1, p. 2
Conclusions • Conclusions are used to summarize • Avoid reanalyzing the paper (You have already presented your arguments) • Reinforce topic, purpose, main points • summary statement • Make an Impact • Quotations • Statement or Question • Final Story • Incite a response
She nailed it • In conclusion, I have found that upon observing the behavior of communicators in a natural state, there are many concepts of communication that take place in conversations and relationships between people. By observing the verbal and nonverbal cues of people together at a Starbuck’s, the five concepts of multitasking, accenting, proxemics, gender, and the interactional model [of communication] were all present in the behaviors conveyed. Moreover, communication can be broken down and analyzed to find the ways in which people use certain verbal and nonverbal actions to improve or impede upon the communication process. • Robles, N. (2014). Multitasking, Accenting, Proxemics, Gender, and the • Interaction Model’s Affect on Communication, Professor Shore’s HCOM100 10a Application paper 1, p. 2

Common grammar stuff from Dr. Brushke • Punctuation is ALWAYS INSIDE quotation marks. • Wrong: “This sucks”. • Right: “This sucks.” • Spacing: APA says double-space after a period (unless it’s an upper division research paper) • Write out numbers to start sentences • Otherwise, use numbers for any number larger than 10, unless the number is not precise (there are other exceptions)
Why? Because Dr. Brushke knows best • Go here: http://commfaculty.fullerton.edu/jbruschke/tips_for_college_writing.htm
