A Brief History • Mask wearing began a long time ago in the city of Venice, when it was known as the Venetian Republic. • At this time the city was very wealthy and people began to dress extravagantly. • The custom of wearing mask in Venice become popular at this time so people could hide their identity. • The people of Venice did not want others to know that it was them when they were doing illegal or not nice things. Like making bad business deals.
History Cont. • The Catholic banned wearing masks in the 1100s. • After a while people started wearing masks only during a three month celebration beginning in December. • After a while the celebration shorten to one week and is know as “Carnevale”. • Carnevale is still celebrated today and beautiful masks are still worn and sold in Venice.
Colombina masks • These are the masks that we will be making in class. • They only cover half of the face.
Making Masks • 4A students - We need to make beautiful Venetian masks to decorate our room. • First, take a look at different masks to get an idea of what you would like your mask to look like.
