Next Step: Monday 9th September Monday 16th September Developing students’ knowledge of the Growth Mindset theory through two M3 lessons
Lesson 1 Students in Year 7 and Year 13 complete the Growth Mindset questionnaire. Discuss: can you get become better at anything? TPS (think, pair, share) activity on the question of 'think of something that you were not very good at, at first, but have got better.' Outline the three Mindset traits and carry out each activity to reinforce the learning. Explore the power of YET (ESSENTIAL) HOMEWORK – bring your effort based success stories to the next lesson (trophies, etc to be encouraged).
Lesson 2 Students will share their effort based success stories. Students make growth mindset and fixed mindset student outlines (colour coded). The activity relies upon students drawing and writing around the outlines actions and statements.
“I don’t want to listen unless you’re going to tell me it’s good.” “I’m happy to have another go”
You are in a Growth Mindset School; what does it:look like….. feel like….. sound like….. • More emphasis on effort than attainment from staff • Students realise that effort = success • Students learn from failure
Always praise effort not ability If a student has done well praise the effort and strategy that led to the achievement. Avoid praising some innate ability.
Use the language of YET If a student is struggling with a task or topic use the language of YET. Focus on how with renewed effort they will always overcome their setbacks and become better.
Encourage Improvements Growth Mindset students understand that it is essential to learn from feedback. Build in time for improvements and praise how the student has responded to your comments. This is just as important for those students currently doing well in your subject as well as those that are struggling.
