  3. Step 1A: List the term • Word is listed neatly

  4. Step 1B: List the parts of the definition • List the most important parts of the definition • Note: Students may need a lot of support with this step.

  5. Step 2: Identify a Reminding Word • Reminding words sound like or rhyme with all or part of the term

  6. Step 3:Note a LINCing Story • Story uses the reminding word • Story gets across the meaning of the word

  7. Step 4: Create a LINCing Picture • Picture illustrates story in an obvious manner

  8. Step 5: Self-test • Self-test was completed with self, peer or partner

  9. How do we give students the support they need to be successful? Scaffolding: • I do it • We do it • Y’all do it • You do it

  10. Why does it work? • Auditoryfocus on making semantic (meaning) connections between the most important semantic features of a new term’s definition, and semantic features of a common, well-known word that has similar phonetic features. • Visual links provide students with a kind of mind map that also helps students remember the essential features of the meaning of new terms.
