Welcome to curriculum night! Mrs. King’s 2nd Grade Class Mill Creek 2013-2014
7:25-7:40Student arrival Students should come in, unpack backpacks, turn in lunch/breakfast/ice cream money or notes. Also, during this time I will take attendance and we will get ready to start our day!
7:40-8:00Morning show/Character Ed Students will view the morning show on the our smart board through mediacast. The morning show last approximately 5-10 minutes. Immediately after the morning show we will begin our Character Ed lesson (sometimes this is simply a story).
8:00-8:30Daily editing activity/Morning Agenda Editing activity will focus around Grammar concept for the week and morning agenda will be activities with our spelling words for the week.
8:30-9:00P.E. P.E. teachers: Coach Joffee and Coach Klien Students will be escorted to the gym during this time. Students are to wear tennis shoes everyday to P.E., no dress shoes, sandals nor crocks are allowed. Please reference P.E. policy note. This note must be signed and returned to school (see email).
9:00-11:10Reading Block Breakdown of our reading block: Journal writing/snack-9:00-9:30 (students must bring a healthy snack and water from home. Water is allowed throughout the day) Whole group reading instruction-9:30-10:00 Small group reading instruction/AR-10:00-10:45 (Other students will be working in Lit. centers) Grammar and writing instruction 10:45-11:10 Note: Wonders is our NEW reading program
11:10-11:40Lunch Time! Students may purchase or bring lunches from home. (prices and menus can be found on Madison City’s Website. (www.madisoncity.k12.al.us) Parents are welcome to join us for lunch on Tuesdays you are also welcome on birthdays. Please take advantage of paypams(see open house information).
11:45-12:00Recess We will have recess everyday but, we are only allowed on the playground on Tuesday and Thursdays. The other days will either be playtime inside or in the open field on the west or east side of the building.
12:00-12:15DEAR Time Drop Everything And Read! Note: This time will also be used for AR.
12:15-1:45Math Block Breakdown of math block: Whole group math instruction 12:15-1:00 Small group math instruction 1:00-1:45 (Other students will be working in math centers “Math Tubs”) Envision is our math program (2nd year implementing)
1:45-2:25Social/Science Science: We incorporate AMSTI kits (Solids and Liquids, Balancing and Weighing, Organisms and Soils) along with our adopted science program. Social Studies: includes special events (such as Historical leaders, our country) along with our adopted Social Studies program
2:25-2:37 Pack-up/Dismissal This concludes our day! We will clean our room, pack up and get ready to dismiss. All transportation changes will need to be emailed to me as early as possible (no later than 2:00.
Behavior I expect each student to follow the rules of our classroom. (see behavior chart and classroom rules) Planner/Calendar will be used for logging behavior each day (Planners can be purchased through the office for $7.00)
Newsletter/Homework Newsletters and homework will be posted on our website weekly. Please check our website often for updates and announcements. Nightly reading 15-20 min will also be required, please log books read in planner on monthly calendar page.
Extra Curricula Activities Computer-1:00-1:30 (Tuesdays) Music/Art-12:00 12:40 (Thursdays) Music Teacher: Mrs. Stewart (1st semester) Art Teacher: Mrs. Newby (2nd semester) Library- will be used as needed Library Teacher: Mrs. Gray Guidance Counseling (classes will meet once a month) Counselor: Mrs. Davis
Test and Assessments Reading: Spelling and comprehension test will be given at the end of each lesson in reading and at the end of each unit. DIBELS testing will be given 3 times this school year STAR Reading testing 5 times this school year AR: Each student will need to meet their goal by the end of 9 weeks. (Parents may keep up with their child’s progress through Home connect, this link is found on our website)
Test and Assessments(cont.) Math: Grading Information for 2nd-6th Grade Application = 20% Journaling = 20% Timed Tests = 20% Teacher Made Test-Quizzes and 9 Week Test = 40%
Report cards/progress reports Report Cards- every 9 weeks Progress reports- every 3 weeks Grading scale: 100-90-A 89-80-B 79-70-C 69-60-D Below 60-F
Absences All absences require a parent or Dr. note. Parent and Dr. notes must be provided within 3 days of absence. 10 parent notes are allowed within a school year (after 10, a Dr. note is needed or the child’s absence will be unexcused) Emailing me your child’s absence note is TOTALLY acceptable. I will forward the notes to Cherly Davies, our office secretary, or you can cc her at cydavies@madisoncity.k12.al.us.
