  4. Prevention • Do not give identifying information to a stranger over the phone or internet. Tell a family member or trusted friend if contacted by someone you don’t know. • Place documents with identifying information in a secure place.

  8. Device Passwords • Power On/Screen Saver • 8 characters – can crack in 2 hours • 12 characters – 17 years • Same PINs in multiple places? No! • Default on smartphone 4 characters – change that • GRC’s Password Haystack • Change regularly

  9. Encryption • Password protection encrypts with some software:

  11. Other protections • Make sure all software is up-to-date • Make sure security software is enabled and scanning • Send personal data only to an encrypted website: https – and look for the lock icon • Disable File and Printer Sharing

  12. Wireless Security – at Work and at Home! • WiFi • WEP • WPA • WPA2 • If your router is too old, get a new one (Linksys, $80)

  13. Things You can Do • Turn off your Wi-Fi • Don’t use open Wi-Fi networks, unless they are WPA2 encrypted with a password • Use a VPN (though he can interfere with the connection and you may disable the VPN in frustration) • Change settings to not remember networks

  14. Public WiFi • Let’s be careful out there (Sgt. Phillip Freemason) • Use your VPN • Are people watching? • Strong passwords • No financial activity • Pick the right network

  15. Shortened URLs • Goo.gl • Ow.ly • TinyURL • Bitly • Avoid them • Decode short URLs

  16. QR Codes • Popular in magazines • Similar to shortened URLs • Popular new attack vector

  17. Smartphones • Look at ALL security settings – defaults may not be strong enough • Only complex finger swipes • Limit unsuccessful attempts • Ability to wipe data

  18. Android Devices • Wild West Application Marketplace • More popular = more targeted • Complex Unlock Pattern • Research Your Apps • Security Apps • Lookout Mobile Security • Privacy Inspector • Norton Mobile Security

  19. All Apple Devices • Have vulnerabilities • Jailbreak = insecure • Update iOS promptly • Complex Passcode • Protect after 5 minutes • Back up your data • Find My iPhone • Wipe data if necessary

  20. Security Software: Lookout Premium • iPhone and Androids • $29.99 • Loud alarm if lost • GPS tracking system • Wiping • Anti-malware

  21. The iPad • Sandboxes apps • Inspects apps before release – no real time monitoring – can’t get to kernel • If OS is compromised, it’s over • Make sure you update your OS

  22. iPad Security • Lookout – Not as robust as on Android, but will alert you when you’re on an insecure WiFi network or have malicious processes running • VirusBarrier – open suspicious e-mail attachments • SecureWeb (secure browsing)
