Introduction: • A sediment record is a collection of periodic, daily, monthly, or annual sediment discharge, expressed as a mass (tons) per unit of time, computed (estimated) by utilizing sediment-sample concentration data obtained at a station (cross-section), water discharge, and sometimes surrogate data on a flowing stream.
Agenda • Types of Records • Types of Data • Records Processing • Station Analysis • Review • Basin Balancing
Types of Records: A. Periodic • 1. Instantaneous - discrete samples • 2. Representative - transport curve
Types of Records (cont.) B. Continuous • 1. Storm • 2. Seasonal • 3. Daily • 4. Yearly
Types of Data A. Sediment • 1. Suspended sediment concentration a. X-sections--monthly and storm periods b. Observer, automated samples • 2. Particle-size distribution a. Suspended sediment • Bed material • Bedload
Types of Data (cont.) B. Ancillary Data • 1. Water discharge • 2. Stage • 3. Temperature • 4. Surrogate
Records Processing A. Checklist • Sediment Discharge Measurement Sheet • 1. Cross section samples • 2. Point or single vertical samples • 3. Coefficients
Records Processing (cont.) C. Sediment Transport Curve • 1. Instantaneous • 2. Daily • 3. Regression for the surrogate
Records Processing (cont.) • Plotting of Surrogate Data • Temporal Concentration Curve F. Daily Sediment Discharge Calculation • 1. Low flow • 2. Uniform flow • 3. High flow (Subdividing) • 4. Surrogate/SSC relationship development
Records Processing (cont.) G. Coefficients 1. Lecture on Tuesday H. Estimates • 1. Transport curve • 2. Hydrograph
Basin Balancing • Multi stations in a basin • Check downstream flow of sediment load • Cross check between sub-basins
Station analysis • Sampling program • Summary of samples collected • Observer • Surrogate record • Coefficients • Discharge computations • Remarks
Review • Evaluate concentration curve • Evaluate application of coefficients • Complete and evaluate station analysis • All-Important review/check procedure: Primary reviewer followed by Record Approver
Jeb’s Work Flow: • Download and gather all appropriate data • Cursory review (the fun part!) • Verify samples, add estimates • Calculate coefficients, calculate loads • Finish up station analysis • Load data into Aquarius • Check/Review
