  4. COMMUNICATION Engineers convey ideas by means of different types of communication. • Types of communication: • Verbal (Oral or written) • Graphical • Mathematical

  5. Communication is: • Selling your competence, knowledge, and judgment. • Speaking the appropriate language. • Understanding both sides of the debate.

  6. ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION • Know your audience!!! • Non-Technical Reports • Technical Reports and Presentations • Charts • Graphs • Models

  7. EFFECTIVE ORAL COMMUNICATION • Be energetic/attitude/voice. • Know your audience!!! • Use the right tool& have a back up plan. • Computer • Over-head projector • Practice and rehearse. • Be aware of time. • Look at your audience. • Leave time for questions.

Homework (discussion/presentation) • Six groups in Pocatello and 2 groups in IF • On Jan 25th, in class, discuss these questions: • Why should we go to Mars? • Who should go to Mars and why? • (man, woman), (married couples), (boyfriend, girlfriend), (Military, civilian), etc. • OR, Engineering vs. Science: • similarities and differences • Is engineering an art or science? Etc.

  20. Homework (discussion/presentation) • Each group prepare a 10 min. presentation. • It can be ppt, overhead, just talking, anything you want. • Everyone has to make a presentation. • Groups 1-4 present on Jan. 30th, and 5-8 present on Feb. 1st. • You will be graded based on your presentation.
