  1. Matthew 5-7

  2. The Sermon In Two Parts • Matthew 5:3-16 Teaches what the believer is suppose to be! • Matthew 5:17 - 7:27 - Teaches what the believer is suppose to do!

  3. A Christian’s Character: (5:3-12) • A Christian’s Influence: (5:13-16) • A Christian’s Righteousness: (5:17-48) • A Christian’s Religion: (6:1-6, 16-18) • A Christian’s Prayer: (6:7-15) • A Christian’s Ambition: (6:19-34) • A Christian’s Relationships: (7:1-20) • A Christian’s Commitment: (7:21-27)

  4. The Ethical teachings of Jesus do not represent a radical departure from the law, but are a natural extension of the two greatest commandments which are first found in the law: • “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart” (Deut. 6:5) • “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev. 19:18) See Matthew 22:37-40

  5. Jesus’ Theme: God Vs. Things "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. (Matthew 6:24; ESV) The Impossibility of Divided Loyalties

  6. What About Material Anxiety? Matthew 6:25-34

  7. Key #1: Jesus Urges Us To Distinguish Between Making A Living And Making A Life. Matthew 5:25,26,32,33

  8. The Worldliness of Worry • "For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25, ESV) “Do Not Worry” – comes from a word which suggests being drawn in two directions, distracted; and, therefore anxious, troubled. “Satan cares little as to whether we are consumed with greed or obsessed by worry as long as our minds are set on things rather than on God.” (Earnhart)

  9. Key #2: Jesus Urges Us To See The Unproductiveness of Worry. Matthew 6:27

  10. What Good Is It To Worry? • "And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? (Matt. 6:27, ESV)

  11. What Worry Can Do? • Worry is when we so fret over material concerns that our anxiety over these things takes control of our lives. It can do one of several things to us... • Paralyze us, rendering us impotent to deal with our financial threats (“Stop worrying and get up and do something about it.”) • Causes us to put the pursuit of material things above more important spiritual matters — sometimes forgetting God and godly things entirely.

  12. Do Not Worry! • A University of Wisconsin study found that: • 40% of worries are about things that never happen • 30% are about past things or things that cannot be changed • 22% were over petty, needless things • only 8% were legitimate concerns.

  13. Key #3: Jesus Urges Us To See That God Knows And Can Meet Our Needs. Matthew 6:26, 28-32

  14. "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? (Matt. 6:26, ESV)

  15. Said the Robin to the Sparrow, “I should really like to know, Why these anxious human beings, Rush about, and worry so?” Said the Sparrow to the Robin, “Friend, I think that it must be, They have no heavenly Father, Such as cares for you and me.” • Poem by Elizabeth Cheyney

  16. 28"And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 "But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! (Matthew 6:28-30)

  17. Example Of The Apostles • 23 When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. 25 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, "Save us, Lord; we are perishing!“ 26 He said to them, "Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?" Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. 27 The men were amazed, and said, "What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?“ (Matthew 8:23-27, ESV)

  18. Have Faith In God! • 31 "Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?‘ 32 "For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. (Matthew 6:31,32, ESV) (See Also Luke 10:38-42)

  19. Key #4: Jesus Urges Us To Live One Day At A Time! Matthew 6:33,34

  20. One Day At A Time, Sweet Jesus! • 33"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 "So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:33,34, ESV)

  21. Questions • Why should the Creator give us life, only to starve us to death? • If He gave us the greater gift of life, why would He withhold the lesser gifts necessary to maintain it? • What kind of God are you serving? • The Gentiles worry! • Our lives are not a fluke, and their continuation is not dependent on blind chance.

  22. What Is The Answer To Anxiety? • Put God Above All • If we want assurance of “these things” we must quit seeking them and seek God. • Be strong and persevere. • Remember: Faith can grow!

  23. Invitation To A Spiritual Revolution by Paul Earnhart • How To Deal With Lust By Brian Anderson • Sermon Outlines on Matthew By Mark Copeland • Outline By Johnny Felker • Outline By Jim Deason • Prayer Outline by Steve Higginbotham • The Gospel of Matthew by Kenneth L. Chumbley

  24. How Do I Overcome The Temptation To Worry... • Make up your mind to conquer it • Abraham Lincoln - “I have been as happy as I have made up my mind to be.” • 2 Cor 10:5 - “take every thought captive” • Form a right relationship with God • Phil 4:6, then see verse 1 • Trust in God • Acts 27:25 – “So Take Courage, For I Believe God…” • God is... • Omniscient - He knows about your needs • Omnipotent- He has the power to meet your needs.

  25. How Do I Overcome The Temptation To Worry... • Transfer Concerns to More Worthy Things Luke 10:38-42 • (Matthew 6:33) but seek ye first the reign of God and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you. (YLT) • Take it to the Lord in Prayer - Psalm 28:6,7; 55:22 • Live One Day at a Time - Matt 6:34 • (Matthew 6:34) "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (NKJV)

  26. Why Is Worrying Sinful? • We are commanded NOT to worry... v. 25, 31, 34; cf. Phil 4:6 • It keeps us from duty... Eph 5:16 • It impairs our health - Psa 32:3-5 • Ever hear of someone worrying himself sick? • Dr. S.S. McMillan in his book “None of These Diseases” shows how hives, asthma, ulcers and high blood pressure can be directly related to worry. Incidents of stomach ulcers go up or down with the stock market.

  27. Why Is Worrying Sinful? • It robs us of joy, happiness and peace • Phil 4:4-7; Prov 17:22 • Worry - derivative of middle English word which means “to strangle” - fighting in two different directions. • Worry reflects a lack of faith, is doubting, and therefore it hinders our prayers... James 1:5,6 • It chokes the word of God out of our hearts... Luke 8:14 (It is interesting that the word “worries” is from same word as “anxiety” in 1 Pet 5:7).
