  2. The Beginning of Rome • The great civilization of Greece was in decline. • The city of Rome was growing • It adopted and preserve much of Greek art, philosophy, religion, and drama

  3. The Beginning of Rome • Three groups inhabited the region • Latin—Known for their farming skills. • Greeks—Known for their commercial trade and art. • Etruscans—Known for their metalwork and architecture(the use of the arch).

  4. Government Republic “public affairs” • The Romans declared they would never be ruled by a King again • Formed a Republic—a form of government in which the power rest within the citizens who select their leaders

  5. How it Function • A consul’s term was a year long/not again for ten years • The Consul could always overrule, or veto, the other’s decisions • One group called the Patricians • Another group called the plebeians • The Senate was another group/served for life

  8. Commercial Network Rome’s Location • Rome Merchants moved by sea and land. • Traded Rome Wine and Olive Oil. • Carthage became the main competitor.

  9. Rome Spreads its Power • Warring states—Punic Wars • First one lasted 23 years (Rome/victors) • Second began in 218 B.C. • War with Carthage (Hannibal) • 29 years old –brilliant military strategist • 50,000 infantry, 9,000 cavalry, 60 elephants • Scipio—Daring Military Leader for the Romans.

  11. The Republic Collapses • Civil War Breaks outs • Julius Caesar emerged to bring order to Rome. • In 60 B.C. joined forces with Crassus, and Pompey. • Pompey becomes a political rival. • Listen to audio

  12. Caesar’s Reforms • Caesar governed as an absolute Ruler • Granted Roman citizenship to many people. • Expanded the senate, adding friends • Created jobs, through construction • Started colonies where landless people could own land • Increased pay for soldiers

  13. Caesar Death March 15, 44 B.C. stabbed to death in the senate chamber

  14. Augustus Becomes ruler of Romein 27 B.C. and died in 14 A.D.

  15. Imperial Rome • Good and Bad Leaders came after the death of Augusta (read top of pg. 150-51) • Was at the peak of its power from 27 B.C. to 180 A.D. (207 years) • Life was good for Men and women, children, but not for slaves.
