  3. Treat users as partners, not masters • Balance initiative and interaction Autonomic job requirements If I hired a person instead, what qualities would I look for? • attention to detail • strong communication skills • initiative, tempered by job boundaries • self-knowledge and willingness to seek help

  4. Autonomic interaction manager Autonomic interaction manager Analyze Analyze Plan Plan Monitor Monitor Execute Execute identity, skills, roles behaviour model comm. channels Knowledge Knowledge ask forhelp ask forhelp receiveadvice receiveadvice I am not a number! • self-configuring:acquire contact info • self-healing:recover frompersonnel changes • self-optimizing:balance disclosure vs. disruption • self-protecting:guard against malicious or incompetent users

  5. Making every message count • Messages must: • integrate into user’s existing workflow • select the appropriate channel • dashboard, feed, email, IM • adapt to their recipient • allow for delegation • integrate a means of action

  6. Growing a policy • Historical action database • record situation—action pairs, approx. match • balance match, bother, rush, risk • Explicit action amplification • amplify action’s scope or context • on-the-spot or as a follow-up • Meta-actions to restrict or rescind rules

  7. Conclusion • We propose to: • improve interaction by shifting the initiative • treat humans as managed elements • use existing comm. channels, bundle actions • Resulting in more trustworthy, usable, adoptable autonomic systems
