Peacekeeping Training • Peacekeeping training is any training activity which aims to enhance mandate implementation by equipping UN military, police, or civilian personnel, both individually and collectively with knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable them: • To meet the evolving challenges of peacekeeping operations in accordance with DPKO/DFS principles, policies, and guidelines as well as lessons learnt from the field, • To perform their specialist functions in an effective, professional, and integrated manner, and • To demonstrate the core values and competencies of the United Nations.

Pre-deployment Training (PDT) for United Nations Peacekeeping Operations
Whatispre-deploymenttraining? PDT – refers to all generic, specialized, and where appropriate mission specific training that is based on UN standards and takes place prior to deployment to a field mission. This training is delivered by Member States to military and police personnel and formed units in their home country.
Who is responsible? Training for military and police contingents prior to deployment is a national responsibility.
What is the role of ITS in terms of support ? ITS supports Member States in the training of military and police personnel by:Developing and disseminating training standards, policies, technical guidance.
What other forms of assistance does ITS provide? ITS also organizes and provides on-site assistance to Member States through Mobile Training Teams, Training of Trainers as well as Training Recognition.
Pre-deployment Training Subjects Patrolling, observation, communication, shooting, navigation, defensive and offensive tactical actions, crowd control etc Core Pre-deployment Training Materials (CPTM) and specialized materials (STM) for Military staff officers and police officers) CPTM + STM Adding to the training military and police concepts of operations, country geographical and cultural information force requirements etc Battalion / FPU field exercise integrating previous training inputs, skills and knowledge Duration Allocation of time depending on national peculiarities 1 week for the CPTM and additional weeks for other training on specific functions 2 weeks 1 week
Whatisin-missiontraining? It refers to training conducted in the deployment phase for DPKO/DFS headquarters staff and mission personnel. It is made up of the induction training and ongoing training.
Whatisinductiontraining? It refers to training that is delivered to military, police and civilian personnel upon arrivalin peacekeeping missions.
Whatisongoingtraining? It refers to any training or learning activity for peacekeeping personnel (military, police or civilian) undertaken during their assignmentin the field subsequent to induction training.
