  1. DRAFT PROGRAMME ADVOCACY COURSE DAY 2 SESSION 7 Coalition building Quiz 4 What do coalitions bring? What are the problems of coalitions? Structures of the coalition SESSION 8 Managing coalition problems Importance of open communication Listening skills Managing tensions Working with difficult members Sound bite 4

  2. Open Communication • Set the example that all voices should be heard. • Create "safe space" • Discuss the "undiscussables" • Take time for conflict resolution and problem solving. • Identify common ground. • Ask questions to seek more information to manage the conflict. • Acknowledge the role of emotions. • Don't question someone else's motives, or place blame. • Listen well

  3. Unity vs. Diversity: • nurture and facilitate member interaction • promote openness and participatory processes • cultivate personal relationships • Confrontation vs. Dialogue: • maintain the coalition's credibility • link the local and the national levels of advocacy on the issue • cultivate relationships on multiple levels, both within the target organization and with other stakeholder groups

  4. Avoid formal structure unless necessary Understand each group's constraints Delegate responsibility Make key decisions as a group Keep everyone informed

  5. Recognize that conflict will occur Mixed loyalties are unavoidable. Coalitions have to be accountable to their purpose and mission. Balancing unity and diversity is demanding.

  6. TIPS FOR MAKING A COALITION WORK • State clearly what you have in common, and what you don’t. • Let the membership and the issue suggest the coalition’s structure and style. • Reach out for a membership that is diverse – but certain. • Choose interim objectives very strategically. • Stay open to partnerships outside the formal coalition structure. • Take care of the coalition itself. • Maintain strong ties from the top to major organizations. • Make fair, clear agreements and stick to them.
